Rotees at Night

Everywhere in the city at night little food stands open up on the street. We have been walking by this one every night and a few nights ago we tried one. Now it's a nightly habit! This is a husband wife team, he prepares the fillings and she makes the dough and cooks. You can have fruit rotee or chicken motaba. I think she prepares the dough at home and then flattens it at the stand. The dough is flipped around the hand and slapped on a stainless steel counter and becomes paper thin.. This is fried and filled with fruit. We are stuck on the banana ones with chocolate sauce on top. Thais also put sweetened condensed milk over them. We draw the line at chocolate sauce!
A motaba is the same dough filled with curried chicken and served with a sauce of sweetened vinegar with cucumber, onion and fresh chili peppers in it. Very yummy!
Our neighbourhood rotee stand is very popular and we have come to realize one of the best. There is always a crowd around their stand. She doesn't use as much oil as some others do. They were in the same spot a few years ago when we came to Chaingmai but we didn't try them then. Sometimes you just know you shouldn't try things because they will be so good that you can't resist more!
We met a couple of nice young people from Australia there last night and they took our picture.
